But what happens next? Councillor Malcolm Wallace gets literally hands on to investigate on our behalf

Malcolm visited a local recovery centre in Portsmouth, to see the process. These facilities can handle 157,000 tonnes of recyclables each year. Our wheelie bin recyclables (mainly plastics, papers and tins) are sorted using a mix of technology and manual checks. The sorted materials are sent to specialist companies that create raw materials for new products. So what about the waste from black bins that can’t be recycled? This is mostly transferred to local energy recovery centres and burned to produce electricity. These facilities can output enough power for 53,000 homes. Collected garden waste is converted locally into soil conditioner and sold at every recycling centre. Malcolm says, “Did you know that less than 5% of Hampshire’s household waste goes to landfill – but we still need to do better to reduce waste incineration!” What’s your experience with local refuse and recycling collections? Please let us know.
